Types of stairs range from basic boxed stairs with stringers on both sides to fasten between two walls. These stairs could be constructed of dimensional lumber used throughout the house in the framing stage. A finished set of boxed stairs would consist of hardwood treads, generally red oak, and either a paint grade wood for the risers and stringers such as poplar or pine, or all oak for an all stain look.
As one moves up the ladder for an upgraded stair, the finished stair can open up over a wall with returned treads and skirt board (one or both sides) as well as rounded bull nose starting steps. (This would lend itself to accepting the scrolled volute handrail with a "birdcage" of spindles underneath.)
Stairs are much more complex than it would appear at first. Whether you are remodeling or working in new construction, be prepared to enter a world of varied choices. The things you have to make decisions about are the configuration of the stair, style, size, wood type, etc. You also have to remember that the rail system can affect the look of your entry as well as the stair itself. A lot of the decisions you will make will depend on an array of factors as well. Whether you are going to have a contemporary or traditional colonial look to your house, the theme will be achieved with your stair system.
The spectrum of stairs can go from the very basic to the grand entry curve
